Roscoe – our original Salty Dog happy tail

Thanks to your kind donations the original Salty Dog mascot, Roscoe, has been saved!!! As a result of hunkering down with his grandpa without power during Irma he suffered a severe case of heat stroke! He spent about 2 weeks in an oxygen chamber at Pet Emergency in Palm Beach Gardens and may still have some long-term neurological problems as a result. He was originally demonstrating “swimming behavior” and didn’t know where his head or feet were. It was a terrifying event. We’re not sure what the exact outcome will be, but Roscoe is now breathing on his own and we are hopeful that he will make a full recovery!

  • It’s been a long road for Roscoe since suffering a heat stroke after hurricane Irma. But thanks to the generous contributions at Salty Dog Paddle I can confidently say that he’s finally made a full recovery. A long way from the moments when we raced to the emergency room thinking he would be gone by the time we arrived. The first few days were critical in giving him a fighting chance to survive. It was diagnosed that he may have suffered brain damage. His trachea was also collapsed. So, he was kept in an oxygen chamber for several days along with a rotating schedule of heavy medications. It wasn’t until January that the chronic coughing due to his collapsed trachea finally diminished. The doctors now have a good combination of anti-inflammatory prescriptions that allow him to live a normal life. I know that Roscoe would not be with us today had it not been for your donations and Salty Dog Paddle.
